A wave of violence struck the Yangtu Special Development Area of Taraba State on 8 August 2023 when armed men believed to be Fulani herdsmen unleashed a series of attacks that resulted in the tragic death of three individuals. The victims, identified as Mr. Rimamskep Atenji, Mr. Andekwab Yakubu Ashasim, and Mr. ElKannah Akyara, all of Kuteb origin, were ambushed while on their way to their farm, falling victim to the ruthless assailants.
The Taraba State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Usman Abdulahi, confirmed the harrowing incident and disclosed that a team of dedicated security operatives had been swiftly deployed to the region.
"The primary objective of the security operatives is to restore peace, ensure the safety of residents, and bring the perpetrators to justice," DSP Usman Abdullahi says.
Mr. Emmanuel Madaki, Coordinator of the Yangtu Special Development Area, sternly condemned the heartless attacks and killing of the innocent citizens. He emphasized the urgency of bolstering security measures in the area to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of the local population.
In a direct appeal to Governor Agbu Kefas, Madaki urged an immediate action to reinforce the presence of security forces in order to create a secure environment for residents and farmers alike.
The brutality of the assaillants has sparked outrage in various quarters. Christopher Andekin, President of the Kwambai Development Association, a community in Yangtu, vehemently condemned the attacks, underlining the need for increased military presence to adequately cover the vast expanse of the Kwambai region. Acknowledging the situation of the grieving families, Taraba News correspondent reported scenes of mourning not only in Kwambai but also in neighbouring areas such as Jalingo.
As authorities continues to work tirelessly to restore tranquility and apprehend those responsible for the dastardly act, the affected communities continue to grapple with grief and demand justice for the lives lost.
The shocking events serve as a grim reminder of the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect the innocent and ensure a peaceful coexistence for all.
